I love cookbooks. I have quite a collection of cookbooks. Years ago, I was given a copy of the Amish Cook’s Anniversary book by Lovina Eicher. I’ve loved that book for years. So, of course, I absolutely had to review The Essential Amish Cookbook by Lovina Eicher. I mean, absolutely had to.

Let me say, this book blows most every other Amish style cooking cookbook so far out of the water, you might consider getting rid of others. I absolutely love the personal style of the writing, the incredible photographs, the glimpses into their lives and the recipes. The recipes by far are some of the best tasting I’ve ever tried out of an Amish cookbook.

The directions in the recipes are quite clear cut and simple. In fact, my ten year old can follow them. I had her make the Carrot Cake from the cake section of the book. It was the most fabulous carrot cake I’ve ever had. Ok, let’s put it this way, I’ve had several bad experiences with carrot cakes in the past. Everyone insisted carrot cake was this incredible delight and that I didn’t know what I was talking about when I said that I despised carrot cake. Well, let me tell you, I didn’t know what I was talking about apparently. This carrot cake is the most incredible carrot cake I’ve ever had in my life. I love it. My husband and eldest have always loved carrot cakes, and they absolutely fell in love with it too. We ate the entire pan in under 48 hours…That was with great self-control…And I mean great self-control.

I loved the descriptions of Amish church services and wedding services and accompanying recipes for dishes that traditionally are served at those functions.

I do have one issue with The Essential Amish Cookbook…In a lot of the recipes that involve baking, it tells you that you can line your baking pans with parchment paper or wax paper. I really don’t recommend that you line a baking pan with waxed paper. The wax will melt into your food and destroy your bakeware… I’ve learned that from previous experiences. I bake a lot of cheese crisps, and wax paper will not work. So use parchment paper instead when you bake, and you’ll be just fine.

So I highly recommend this book for everyone who loves to cook, is interested in the Amish and whomever loves to eat good food.
