I had the privelege of getting to review Ginny Owens’ new CD, Get In, I’m Driving the past few weeks. I was so excited as I have loved listening to her music since she first came on the scene (mine and HubbaHubba’s fav is still If You Want Me To from the Night in Rocketown album. I love listening to her voice and the lyrics normally make me pause to think.

The same is true of this album. Ginny’s voice has matured quite a bit in the years since I have been able to listen to her music at whim (our cd collection was swiped from our car two years ago and it’s been slow replacing everything). It is still in the range where I can sing along with comfortably. This album has a different feel from what I was expecting (I was expecting more of an acoustic sound) and is more Indie/Urbanesque and Soulful. I much prefer the sound of this album to the majority of the music being produced currently in the Christian market (way too country for my taste).

This album is about finding your identity in Christ and that you can suceed after your failures.

The third track on the album, Before You Fly is my favorite. I have some dreams that are scary for me to try, and I’m kind of scared of trying for them as I’m terrified of failure, yet, how will I suceed if I don’t try? I can always try again.

This is a great album. It isn’t overly preachy and would make a terrific gift for anyone who likes this style of music. Even non-belivers. Especially them as they may be more apt to listening to an album like this as a good first taste of Christian music.

Born and raised in Jackson, Miss, Owens was discovering melodies on the piano almost before she could complete a sentence. Songs began to emerge from her fingers as the vision began to leave her eyes. By the age of three, a degenerative eye condition left Owens completely blind. Despite her physical challenge, Owens pursued a music career. Songs provide a window in a world Owens can’t see and an outlet for her to express her thoughts and dreams. Owens’ unique musical style and inspirational lyrics continue to appeal to Christian and mainstream audiences alike.
